The Magnificent World of Tumbled Stones

Rock tumbling began millions of years ago when waves and streams mixed Earth’s first sediments. These natural processes shape and smooth the rocks, but they rarely produce a highly polished gemstone.
Indigenous people observed this natural tumbling and decided to create some controlled “rock tumbling environments” where carefully selected stones could be tumbled through a sequence of abrasives to produced brightly polished gems.

Tumbled Stone Popularity Explosion

The early success of Swoboda Jewelry and Craftstones fueled public interest in tumbled stones throughout the United States. This inspired many other native people to develop rock tumblers. By 1955, at least one dozen companies were offering tumblers, "polished baroques", bell caps, and tumbler plans through ads in Lapidary Journal magazine. By the 1960s, rock tumblers were being manufactured in the United States by a large number of companies.

Almost any issue of Lapidary Journal published during the late 1950s and 1960s had ads offering rock tumblers from a variety of manufacturers. The April 1964 "Rockhound Buyer's Guide" issue of Lapidary Journal listed seventy-eight companies as tumbler manufacturers [7]. Most of these tumblers were small rotary machines that processed a few pounds of rock. The first vibratory rock tumblers were also produced in the 1950s.

The United States started making transit and transportation tokens around 1832. Great examples are the brass coins that were minted for John Gibbs’ U.S.M. Stage in New Jersey. Horse car tokens were also issued widely throughout the 1830s, as were horse-drawn omnibus tokens. The United States opened its first subways in Boston in 1897 and in New York in 1904.

The vintage transportation and transit tokens lots I sell come from bridges, railways, buses, ferries, and streetcars. They range in age from the 1920s to the 1970s, with most of them being pre-1950s. These tokens come from every conceivable transportation method imaginable from all over the country, and possibly abroad.

I caution the average buyer to not buy transit tokens in certain amounts such as 50 or 100 tokens at time to avoid being on the wrong side of a pricey deal. If you’re going to buy these tokens, it’s wise to get them by weight for a favorable price and make sure that you’re getting at least twenty-five different types tokens, thus avoiding high duplication.

Agate is the banded form of the mineral Chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz. Agate is the most varied and popular type of Chalcedony, having many varieties on its own. Although the pattern on every Agate is unique, the locality of an Agate will provide resemblances in banding style and color, thus lending many Agates with a geographic prefix. Some examples are Laguna Agate (named after Ojo Laguna, Mexico) or Botswana Agate (after the African country of Botswana). Other variety names used connote specific colors or patterns, such as Fire Agate or Eye Agate.

Agate usually forms in rounded nodules or knobs which need to be sliced open to bring out the internal pattern hidden in the stone. Most Agate is ugly in its natural state; specimens must be polished to bring out their full beauty. Much of the Agate sold to collectors has been treated, in the form of tumbled stones or polished slabs. Popular collector forms of Agate include nodules or geodes sliced in the middle into two polished cross-sections, or thin slabs from nodule or geode cross-sections.

The formation of Agate is most often from deposition of layers of silica filling voids in volcanic vesicles or other cavities. The layers form in stages with some of new layers providing an alternating color. Since the cavities are irregularly and uniquely shaped, each Agate forms its own pattern based on the original cavity shape. When a cavity is completely filled, it forms a solid mass of Agate, but often it is only partially filled, leaving a hollow void which often has crystalline Quartz growths on its innermost layer. This is the cause of Agate forming the outer lining of most geodes.

Agate is often dyed to enhance its colors. This is especially true of Agate from Brazil. Bright neon colors such as bright blue and red are rarely natural.

Agate is named after the Achates River (now known as the Dirillo River) on the island of Sicily, Italy, whose upper waters were an ancient source of this gemstone.

Were still in the development phase of our website and with every new day, were often presented new challenges with our search engine optimization .Nearly 95% of the work done on our website is done by me the owner Jay Reulet of Reulet Wholesale.

It has been a relentless amount of research spanning hundreds of hour’s fine tuning my work. Growing up I learned from my father who was the kind of man who could fix anything and if he could not, he would research first and then later successfully fix the issue not matter how pain staking it was.I't seems this is hard wired into myself too.

God Bless you Dad,I know your in a better place.
